I remember the very first time, for no reason at all, I heard the words “ l love you daddy”. From a child that small there was no expectation from her to hear me say it back, although I’m sure I did, it was simply her letting me know. We all want to know we are loved. We often gage love by how we are treated or maybe what we are given. I think we may even have a very distorted view of what love is sometimes. We look for it in all the wrong places. Often, in pursuit of love we will find ourselves doing things we normally wouldn’t or shouldn’t. But is it really love when we have to do that? So the author and originator of love is God. If we want to know if we are truly loved or loving others then I would say he is our source to go to and find out. 1 Corinthians 13 has often been referred to as the love chapter. Paul, speaking of spiritual gifts in his letter to the church in Corinth, gives us a list of the Godly attributes of love. In verses 4-7 it tells us, love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy or boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps not record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices in the truth. It always protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres.
If there was a love gauge that read from empty to full, these attributes would determine where the needle would fall. We could be the best workers or givers or the smartest and wisest in the room and it wouldn’t make that needle move the slightest!! It’s what’s in our hearts! If Jesus isn’t there then true love is missing! Without him we are missing the true love we desire and we cannot truly love others without him!! Is your meter reading on the empty end of the gauge? Maybe it’s time to invite Jesus into your life. It will be full in no time!! Thank you Jesus for your great love!! Teach us from your word dear Lord to love others as you have loved!!
Rejoice in the day today because you are loved!!
