I worked with a man a few years ago who had been in a bike gang in his younger years. He had been a pretty rough character. One day, things were not going well and I let out some not so good language. He took me aside and asked me if I had ever really thought about the words I was speaking. He said curse words used in a sentence really make no sense. He told me that if a person uses a lot of curse words then that must mean that they are not intelligent enough to come up with something better to say that makes more sense! Ouch!! Ephesians 4:29 says: do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful in building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
Unwholesome talk is not just foul language. It could be gossip or backbiting or just butting into business that isn’t yours even if it’s done with the best intentions. This is a lesson I’m still learning. Ours words cannot be unsaid. It is so important to use restraint in our speech and be ever so careful to only say what is good and necessary for helping others. Most of the time I would be better off not speaking at all!! Maybe praying about what to say before we say it and taking time to think and use the good intelligence that God gave us would be a better option! Lord, forgive us for so often using unwholesome speech and help us to work to do better!
Be well my friends
