I have a short attention span. Or maybe I should add that I have a short attention span about certain things. I remember what I make it important to remember but some things I forget. I can remember the lyrics to songs I liked from the 1980s but I may not be able to tell you what I read in the Bible this morning even a couple hours from now. I say this to my own shame! The first verse I read this morning was from James 1:22-25 Do not merely listen to the word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at himself in the mirror and then goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom and continues in it, not forgetting what they have heard but doing it, they will be blessed in what they do.
Do we so easily forget God’s word because we are not looking into it intently? My wife has asked me to go to the store to get something and I’ll come home with three things and none of them are what she asked me to get. Why? Because the chips and cookies were more appealing to me than the lettuce. It’s easy to be distracted by what can harm us because it looks good at the time. What if I made the lettuce more important. Write down lettuce on a note. Put the note where I can see it. Make it important because it was important to the one who asked me! God asks us to follow him in certain ways to keep us from harm and to bring him glory. We don’t always understand it but we should, I should, make it important to me to follow his word. Look intently into it, not forgetting like I so easily do, but setting my mind to remembering and following it. Dear God, I so often fail to make you the priority of my life. Forgive me . Thank you for your Son who so willingly gave his life to forgive us. Thank you for your word. Help us to make it the priority of our lives!!
Have a great day!
