It’s very normal human behavior to put people in classes or groups. And then it’s also normal to get into the group that makes us feel the most comfortable. It’s like the intro to the sitcom cheers. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name. And their always glad you came. It’s true. Sadly most people would feel more comfortable in a bar than church. The class system is even in church. No matter where you go the “regulars” always have their section they sit in and maybe even their seats. It’s kinda fun to sit in someone’s seat and watch them figure out where to sit!! Not nice though so please don’t. My question is this: is it okay to separate in the church? Let’s see what our brother Paul says. In Romans 12:14-16 he writes: Bless those who persecute you;bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
Listen, I’m not gonna tell you that I’m mr perfect here and always just love and accept everybody. What I am gonna tell you is that I should. If we never step out of our comfort zone and build relationships with people , and yes even people in a different group than us,no matter what that group is, then how can we share the love of Christ? It’s easy to talk about Jesus with others who believe and are in our own “class”. But we are not to segregate ourselves especially with arrogance. So someone less fortunate than us or more fortunate than us or different colored than us or different sexual preferences than us or on and on; do they not also have the same right to know Jesus as we do? And how will they get to know him and the good news of salvation if we always distance ourselves? Jesus himself always went to the hated and the outcasts of society and befriended them. Shouldnt we? Dear Father in heaven, oh how we need your help! Help us to study your word. Help us to study you and then go out and love people like you love people!!
Love someone today that you normally wouldn’t. It may surprise you what a friend they may be!!
