The sound of silence

You know how sometimes you’ll be listening to a song that you’ve heard many times, but then it plays and you really hear it this time? Yesterday I was listening to “The sound of silence” written by Paul Simon but performed by the rock band Disturbed. The words gripped me and I couldn’t shake them from my head. I did a little research on the song. It’s basically about how we talk meaninglessly but not meaningfully to each other. Like we’ve forgotten how to love and communicate deeply with each other. It’s true. It’s true on a biblical level!! I’m not going to point any fingers here without pointing them at myself. One of the lines of the song is : People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening.
When need to ask ourselves when we talk if what we are saying is benefitting anyone or is it just noise? When someone is pouring out their heart to us are we just hearing them or are we listening? With our heart? The main command of Jesus was to love each other and to love him. He asked us to confess our sins to one another. Not so that we have something to gossip about but rather so we can pray specifically for each others problems and that we can overcome them! If we don’t communicate this way out of love for each other then it’s like the silence in the song. It’s silence of the heart. Another line in the song is: Fools said i you do not know , silence like a cancer grows. Hear my words that I might teach you, take my arms that I might teach you.
Can you hear how desperately the author is trying to open the eyes to the silencing of our hearts? I guess that’s what I’m doing now. We live in a harsh world that desperately needs the love of Jesus. How can we share His love if we are not even loving each other? Join me in having real, transparent, truthful conversation. Yes, it can be ugly, but brings beautiful results! Let’s not let our hearts be silenced by the meaningless chatter that wages war on our souls!! Let’s love as Jesus loves! Thank you Lord that you can teach us even from a song! Help us to listen intently to your words and heed them and teach us to speak words of truth and love and not just meaningless talk!!

Love y’all !! Have a great day!!
