I used to work at a farm equipment dealership. I remember the first time I was called out to go to a farm and fix a combine that was broken down. I was nervous because I had no idea what was wrong with it. I asked Dick, my boss, to ride along and he happily went along for support. I spent so much time fretting and worrying as we went, that I couldn’t even enjoy the comfort that was supposed to come from Dick being with me!! You know why? It was because I was too busy needing to know in my mind, instead of trusting the one who did know that was right there with me!!
Jesus’ disciples had the same problems. Always full of doubts and fears and questions. Jesus, who had all the answers to life was right there with them. The problem was that pride got in the way. They couldn’t just relax and trust Jesus. Jesus loved them anyway. He is so patient and kind! I don’t know about you, but I’m just like the disciples! When life comes at me with hard things, I often question God. I want to know why he lets it happen or why he waits so long to rescue me! Sound familiar?
In John 14, Jesus says: You believe in God, believe also in me. Again in Mark 5:36 he says: Don’t be afraid; just believe. The word believe doesn’t just mean to believe he exists. Even satan does that. To believe in God the Father and Jesus the Son means to trust them. Trust them to save us. Trust them to forgive us. Trust them to calm our storms and rescue us from even ourselves!! Jesus saved his people over and over. He didn’t keep them from pain or terrible situations but he was always with them and the outcome was always for their good! He hasn’t changed. He is still with his people through the worst of life and he will see us through it and bring us home to be with him. Our part? Believe!! Trust!! Obey!! Love!! Let’s not let the troubles of this life rob us of the joy of His presence! Let us trust and believe in Him so we can have peace! It’s why He came! It’s why we celebrate this Christmas and every Christmas!
Thank you Father and thank you Jesus for always being with us. Thank you for your word and Spirit you’ve given us to comfort and guide us to your will and for your glory!! Amen!
Merry Christmas my dear friends and may you fully enjoy the peace and love of Christ this Christmas!!!
