Taming the beast(tongue)

Have you ever said something you wish you hadn’t? Like the second it leaves your mouth, you start feeling the regret? I know I have. To tell the truth, often times when I do that, I get a nudge from inside telling me not to but I muscle past that and say it anyway. Sound familiar? So how can we overcome this strong urge to spew out hurtful words, or gossip, or harsh judgemental comments? The book of James tells us that the tongue is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body and it sets the course of one’s life on fire!! It’s says that we praise God and curse man with the same tongue! Our words are the hardest thing to control but not impossible with God. It starts by controlling our thoughts. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says we should take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ. Sounds easy right? Nope! It’s not easy. As Christ followers, we are his representatives here on planet earth. When people watch our lives, and they do, who do they see? The old nature that we used to live in, or the new nature? Often, it’s our words that bear witness to our hearts. If our hearts haven’t changed then our words likely haven’t either. We need to fill our minds with God’s word, pray continually, and use the good brain God gave us to think before we speak. We need to ask ourselves before we say a word: Does what I’m about to say benefit those who are listening? Is it something that Jesus would say if he were here? Is what I’m about to say possibly going to hurt someone within earshot? Based on the wisdom of God’s word and the leading of his Spirit, and after asking ourselves these question before we speak, we should then know whether to let the words pass by the lips or forever banish them from our very being!! Solomon wrote in proverbs 12: The words of the reckless pierce like swords but the tongue of the wise brings healing! Let’s be the wise ones that bring healing!

Lord, help us to be deep thinkers, and thoughtful in our speech so we can be better witnesses for you!!

Gave a great days friends!!
