When I was a kid we had a cistern behind the house. The rain would travel through the gutters of our home and run into the cistern providing water for washing and such. If we didn’t get rain then we would have to haul water to it. After awhile, my Dad had a well dig and it was fed not by rain but from a continuous supply from an underground spring. No more hauling water!! When I think about the difference between a cistern and a well it reminds me of life. A cistern is just an empty hole until either it rains or we put water in it. Our life can be this way. We are always trying to fill our lives with things to satisfy us but they only last for awhile. Soon our life is empty again and needs to be filled. A well has a supply from another source. A spring that keeps it full and never lets it run dry. In John 4:13&14 Jesus, talking to a woman, tells of a living water that will never leave us thirsty for more. It’s him. Jesus is the source that can keep our hearts from needing to be filled with all those things we put in. That hole in our heart can only be kept full by him because it was meant for him. Nothing else in life satisfies like the love of Jesus! Is your heart a cistern or a well? Thank you Jesus for supplying all my needs and taking my dried up cistern of a heart and making it a well that is full of your love!!
Have a good day!
