Remember the song: I can’t get no satisfaction ? What would it take for you to find contentment? Is it wrong to not be content? From early life we are taught to work and strive and push. Is that so that ultimately we can reach contentment? Can we really achieve it on our own? Is that the end game? I’ve had these questions over the years myself. Paul might have asked these questions in his early life but he figured out the answers. In Philippians 4:11-13 he tells us that he learned to be content in all situations. Folks, that man was in some doozy situations! He was tortured, shipwrecked, naked and hungry, but he also was comfortable and knew success in his ministry. Notice he said he learned to be content. He had to set his mind to being content. Yes he could have gotten down or worked harder or busied himself and forgot about it all but none of that would have worked. So how was he different from us? Well, Paul was not living in the here and now. His mind was on Christ. While on earth his goal was to teach about Christ and His salvation, but his heart was in heaven. His hope was in what was to come when either he died or Jesus returned. Hope in earthly things is really no hope at all. We can’t wish ourselves money and work to get it and ever have enough. If we did get enough, we’d want more. We can’t wish ourselves the perfect spouse or the best health or anything really. Don’t get me wrong, work is good and goals are good and yes we should take care of ourselves but ultimately there is no contentment to be found. Only the peace and understanding that comes with knowing that Jesus has forgiven us and has our future, that is far greater than our wildest dreams, already planned! And it is gonna be awesome!! That is contentment. I don’t want to be like the Stones: never satisfied. I want to be like Paul. To set my mind on being content with whatever life brings!!
Thank you Jesus for all you’ve done, are doing and will do in our lives!!
Love ya folks
