Perfect gifts

Veterans Day 1976 was a day forever burned into my memory. I was almost ten years of age and my family and I were processing pigs in the summer kitchen. I went out to feed scraps to my dog and when I turned around to head back in I couldn’t believe my eyes. Our house was engulfed in flames! I ran inside yelling to Dad that the house was on fire. A few hours later, everything I knew as home was gone. All we had was what we were wearing. I had on jeans with an RC Cola patch on the knee and deer skin slippers my Uncle Bill had made for me. Christmas was just a few weeks away but somehow it just didn’t seem right. The joy of this season would be drowned out with pain and loss, or so I thought. Then God stepped into the story.

The day I’m about to share with you is just as memorable as the day of the fire. Our family was told to go to the little gym at the Augusta grade school at a certain time on a certain day. When we walked in together tears immediately filled our eyes! Local church folks, friends and relatives and people we barely knew had brought us gifts! So much so, that we had more then than we had prior to the fire!! James 1:17 says: Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

God is the ultimate giver! He gave to us through the generosity He gifted to all those people and I am forever grateful to Him and to them for all they gave to us at such a time! We were blessed even in our loss!!

Thank you Father for your unchanging generosity!!
