God alone

Have you ever had a thing or a someone that you just couldn’t part with? You know, you get anxious at the thought? I think if honesty was in us at all we would admit that this is true of all of us. Have you ever heard someone say: I’ll part with (fill in the blank) over my dead body? Kinda drastic wouldn’t you think? Let’s seek truth together here for just a moment. What or who do you have in your life, that if they were gone for whatever reason , it would actually cause you to die? We can learn to live without most things short of food and water. Our bodies do need nourishment to live but aside from that, little else is necessary. The rest are just perks. So if we cherish them as if our lives depend on them, be it our possessions or our people, could it be said that these are our gods?
Our souls were made by God, the God , to long after him and him alone. He really truly is life. Without him we are just bodies sustained by food and water but our souls are dead. With him though our souls are awakened to life! You see, our souls need nourishing just as our bodies and God himself is the only source of nutrient that will sustain it in life.
The trouble in all of this is when we try to nourish our souls with anything or anyone other than God. Anything other than God is to our soul what a weed is to a garden. It takes away nutrients causing us to wither away. But if we put God on the throne of our hearts and put everything else under Him, we will thrive!!

Father, help us to rip from our existence anything rooted into our heart, where you alone should be rooted, deep and unable to be removed. May no “thing” or no person take a seat on the throne of our hearts. May the joy of this journey we call life be you, oh God, and you alone! We thank you for the good gifts and the people you have given us, but remind us often that they are just gifts. You oh God are the creator and giver of all that is good . You alone are worthy of our worship!!
