When I was I kid, my family had livestock. We had cows, chickens, and a lot of hogs! Chores were part of my life from my earliest memory. I would say that the most important thing was water. I remember times when the well pump would fail and all work being done stopped and all attention was on fixing that pump. I remember my Dad hauled water from a pond because our well wouldn’t keep up. Water was life to our farm. Without it death would soon come. Funny thing about water; as long as we have it we don’t think about it, but as soon as we don’t have it then that’s all we think about!!
The psalmist who penned Psalm42 wrote : As the deer pants for water, so my soul pants for you, oh God. The picture here is a deer who can’t find water. The deer is so worked up over it that it is panting desperately as it runs around looking for water. If you read this psalm you find that the writer can’t seem to find God. He is being taunted by his enemies who are saying: Where is your God? As he desperately searches for him he preaches to himself. In verse 5 he says: Why are you in despair o my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God for I again will praise him for the help of his presence.
We all have times when we feel like we are under attack. We need God and it feels like we can’t find him anywhere. He’s there. Sometimes we need to preach a little sermon to ourselves reminding our soul that God is there. He never leaves us or forsake us. He is our living water. We should stay near to him and not just seek him when we are desperate. Then the panic sets in. The Bible tells us to draw near to God and he will draw near to us. He is our very life!! Dear God, thank you for being there even when we can’t see you or find you. Help us not to just seek you when troubles come but to keep you near every hour of every day!!
Love y’all. Stay thirsty for God!!
